El mercado de las Zuquillo está tan deteriorado que un buen día se derrumba y deja a las chicas sin trabajo cambiando drásticamente su vida. Charo decide emigrar a los Estados Unidos, Lucha descubre a su amado Johnny con otra, Nacha y Meche, concluyen que debe irse del país acompañando a Charo. De esta manera se inicia "Zuquillo Exprés", cuando las cuatro mujeres cruzan la frontera guiadas por un coyote.

The workplaces that “Las Zuquillo” (popular figures of ecuadorian stage and television) maintain at the municipal fruit and vegetable Market are so old and dilapidated that one fine day the entire structure collapses, leaving our four main characters without work for an entire year. Obviously the everyday lives of all that work at the Market are deeply affected by this tragedy, especially our four heroines.

Charo decides to visit her sister that lives in the USA and maybe if all works out, why not, stay a few years as well. But getting a visa is another story, as Charo finds out only too well. Her application is denied. Not giving up her dream, a friend introduces her to the neighborhood Coyote expert on the ins and outs of getting their customers illegally to their destinations.

El 29 de abril de 2009 dos músicos presenciaban impotentes desde el carro como policías y estudiantes se enfrentaban. Unos disturbios estudiantiles les impedían llegar al ensayo con la orquesta sinfónica de Mérida en Venezuela. Quedaba un día para tocar en el evento de sus vidas: un Tributo Sinfónico a la banda de rock británica Pink Floyd y contemplaban como se desmoronaba toda posibilidad de que se llevara a cabo.

La ciudad se encontraba militarizada e inmersa en protestas universitarias y disturbios estudiantiles. Al mismo tiempo la gripe porcina había llegado al país y el gobernador suspendió todo evento que aglomerara personas. Los músicos deciden hacer el concierto a puertas cerradas, sin contar con el público pero para que quedara registrado en el documental. Una semana mas tarde logran coordinar otra vez todo lo necesario para finalmente realizar el concierto tributo que duro dos días y contó con mas de 90 músicos en escena.

Pinkfonik es un tributo sinfónico a la banda de rock mas grandilocuente del mundo en medio de fuego, piedras y bombas lacrimógenas..

On the 29th of April, 2009, two musicians watched hopelessly from the car as students and police clashed against each other. Student riots impeded them from

getting to a rehearsal with the Merida symphony orchestra in Venezuela. There was just one day left to play in the event of their Lifetime: A synphonic tribute to the Brittish rock band Pink Floyd, as they contemplated how the whole function was crumbling right before their very eyes.

The city was under police and military seige and inmersed in University protests and student riots. At the same time, the Swain flu epidemic had just broken out and was making World headlines, so the State Governor had suspended all public activities and gatherings. The musicians decide to have the concert under closed doors without the public in order to document it on film. A week later they are able to coordinate again all the activities and finally perform the inconcert tribute that lasted two days and was composed of ninety musicians.

A synphonic tribute to the most grandiloquent rock band among rocks, teargas and fire.

Miles de ellos se volcaron a las calles de esta ciudad para venerar a su patrona. La Virgen salió de la Iglesia San Lorenzo en Lavapiés, - la cual le había servido de refugio hasta entonces -, pero al finalizar la misa no pudo volver a entrar a esa capilla.

Esta es la historia de una Virgen sin papeles, que busca en Madrid un lugar para vivir...

On September 10, 2006, and for the second consecutive year, every Ecuadorian immigrant celebrated the procession in honor of the Virgin of El Cisne, “La Churona”, in Madrid. Thousands of them flooded the streets to venerate their Patron Mother.

The Virgin left for the procession from the San Lorenzo Church in Lavapiés – which had served as her refuge all along – but when mass came to an end, she was not allowed back in the chapel. Other churches didn’t allow her in either.

This is the story of an Ecuadorian Virgin “without papers” who is looking for a place to live in Madrid.

Hay secretos ocultos tras cada objeto, pero es justamente en el interior de las casas, tras sus paredes silenciosas, donde se esconden los secretos más intensos y humanos. La Casa del Alabado se construyó en 1671 como parte del centro histórico de Quito y ha sobrevivido al tiempo y sus cambios.

Los documentos oficiales datan la fundación española de Quito en 1534, y registran diligentemente los nombres de los colonos y arquitectos europeos. Erigida en el corazón de los Andes, la capital ecuatoriana fue la primera ciudad declarada por la UNESCO Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. Pero entre los muros de su extraordinaria belleza se oculta la trágica historia de las masas indígenas que desde el anonimato y la explotación fueron los verdaderos constructores, y hoy los restauradores, del casco antiguo más grande de Latinoamérica.

Labranza oculta es un documental sobre las vidas atrapadas entre los muros de la historia. Los albañiles que restauran la Casa del Alabado nos conmueven al narrar con humor e inteligencia sus vidas y aspiraciones. Los acompañamos en su rutina diaria: modelar adobes, cortar caña, revivir los rituales de construcción del siglo XVII, en medio de los juegos, las bromas y la camaradería con los que aligeran la jornada.

Convertidos en testigos de estas historias personales, viajamos al interior de las vidas de los “olvidados”, para recordar que son esas masas anónimas las que con su sudor labran la historia.

Every objet has its secrets, but it is probably inside houses, behind their silent walls, where they are most intense and human. The Alabado House was built in 1671 as part of Quito’s colonial Old City, surviving centuries of earthquakes, poverty and decay. Over the past five years, dozens of manual laborers have been working to restore it.

Official documents date the Spanish foundation of Quito to 1534, dutifully recording the names of its European settlers and architects. Located in the heart of the Andes, it was the first city to become a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. But its miraculous beauty conceals a long and tragic history. For it was the oppressed indigenous masses who built the Old City, the largest in Latin America.

The silent walls is a documentary about the lives behind the walls of history. The workers restoring the Alabado House surprise and charm us by telling their tales, sharing their dreams and aspirations. We accompany their daily routine: molding the bricks and cutting the cane with the methods of seventeenth-century builders. Then comes payday, the architects’ inspection, laborers bathing under the patio faucet after an exhausting day of work.

As witnesses to these personal stories, we travel into the lives of the “forgotten.” It reminds us that history is built by people, the anonymous mass that sweats and toils.

Freda, una afroecuatoriana fundó en Argentina un centro cultural que reunía a la mayoría de los afrodecendientes de Buenos Aires, una ciudad donde se dice no hay negros.

La casa en la calle DEFENSA1464, donde funcionaba el centro cultural de Freda, recibió una oferta de compra por lo que el dueño decide desalojar a Freda, pero ella se resiste a perder su centro cultural. El dueño para forzarla a irse le corta la luz y el gas, pero Freda se resiste durante un año viviendo a luz de vela y dos baterías de coche.

Un día al tratar de reparar las conecciones eléctricas en el subsuelo Freda se encuentra con un tunel que aparentemente fue usado por los esclavos africanos del siglo XVIII. A partir de este hallazgo Freda decide no dejar la casa y crear allí un museo de la historia afroamericana.

A través de Freda conoceremos a seis personajes afroargentinos decendientes de esclavos traídos al país, quienes nos contarán las historias que sus abuelos les contaron. Esas historias que se borraron de la historia oficial.

15 years ago… Freda, an afro descendent from the ecuadorian coast, migrated to Argentina and founded with no economic resources a cultural center in the street Defensa 1464, which became the most important afro referent in Buenos Aires, a city where it’s said there are no blacks. Two years passed and the bad shape of the house left the cultural center without electricity, forcing her to subsist with two car batteries and candles, meanwhile keeping this initiative running.

While trying to repair the electrical connections in the basement, they found a tunnel system that allegedly was used by the African slaves in the XVIII century. Paradoxically, the owner of the building received an offer to sell the house and asked her to evacuate the place. Freda in order to preserve this tangible evidence, initiated a campaign to turn those living quarters into a museum of Afro-Argentinean history, nevertheless, she ended up being evicted and in the streets empty handed.

What happened with the afro-descendent population that in the 1800´s reached as much as 35% of the inhabitants of Buenos Aires? Where is their heritage? Through the universal and intimate human drama of Freda, we will meet the Afro Argentinean population and their struggle to reinvindicate their history in the creation of this country.

The joy and music in the every day life of these characters takes us to a buried past unknown to the majority. Today, the house remains empty and Freda’s struggle to regain it continues.

In order to understand our present is essential to know our past… all of it.

Hace varios años Darío Aguirre viajó desde Ecuador hacia Alemania por su gran amor y se quedó. Profundamente influenciado por la sensación de vivir entre dos mundos, este director decide ahondar el tema de su identidad cultural. Para esto eligió una manera inusual: a través de Internet, se puso en contacto con personas de su mismo nombre y se propuso visitar a cinco de ellos en América Latina.

En su documental, describe de una manera muy personal, su encuentro con un psicólogo, un taxista jubilado, un guardia que le gusta dibujar retratos, un soldado que le encanta el fútbol y un joven deportista. Estos Daríos no sólo lo llevan a sus realidades, sino que le enseñan a conducir, disparar y le dan clases de hospitalidad, amor y pertenencia.

De esta forma logra Aguirre en tiempos de globalización una película de ensayo con un enfonque optimista entre los continentes, que tienen una gran cantidad de experiencia de vida por comunicar y compartir!

Following his true love several years ago, Dario Aguirre left Ecuador behind for Germany and there he stayed. Deeply influenced by feelings of life lived between two worlds, this director now takes a closer look at his cultural identity. For this, he has selected a rather unusual path; he contacted people with his own namesake via the Internet and decided to visit five of them in Latin America.In his documentary, he shows in a highly personal way how he meets a psychologist, a taxi-driving retiree, a portrait-sketching security guard, a soccer-obsessed soldier and a young athlete.

These Darios don’t just take him into their realities, they teach him how to drive, shoot and provide lessons on hospitality, love and belonging. In a time of globalization, this life-positive essay film spanning the continents has a lot of much-needed life experience to offer.

Vor einigen Jahren reiste Dario Aguirre für seine große Liebe von Ecuador nach Deutschland und blieb. Tief geprägt vom Gefühl des Lebens zwischen zwei Welten, setzt sich der Regisseur heute mit seiner kulturellen Identität auseinander. Dafür wählte er einen ungewöhnlichen Weg: über das Internet kontaktierte er Namensvetter und machte sich auf, fünf von ihnen in Lateinamerika zu besuchen. In seinem Dokumentarfilm schildert er auf höchst persönliche Weise, wie er einen Psychologen, einen taxifahrenden Rentner, einen Porträts zeichnenden Wachmann, einen Fußball begeisterten Soldaten und einen jungen Sportler kennenlernt. Diese Darios nehmen ihn nicht nur mit in ihre Lebenswirklichkeiten, sie lehren ihn auch Autofahren und Schießen und erteilen ihm Lektionen in Sachen Gastfreundschaft, Liebe und Zugehörigkeit. Jorge Prelorán filmó por más de veinte años un género propio, las etnobiografías. Centrándose en la vida de un personaje y siguiéndolo por un tiempo determinado, logró profundos retratos para expresar la particular visión del mundo de diferentes personas. Huellas… se inscribe dentro de esa línea, sólo que en este caso el protagonista es el mismo Prelorán. Su vida tiene interés propio al margen de su amplia trayectoria como documentalista. Niño de clase alta de San Isidro, aprendió a hablar inglés antes que español. Fue vendedor de huevos, botones de hotel, soldado en Alemania. Solitario, aventurero. Referente internacional del documental antropológico, nominado al Oscar. El más prolífico realizador de su generación.

Haber filmado esta película y haber conocido a Jorge fue un punto de inflexión. Convivir con él durante más de cuatro años, reencontrarse con un maestro que motiva y contagia su fiebre creativa. Un humanista empedernido que nunca perdió la fe en la condición humana.

Jorge’s life has its own interest despite is brilliant career as a documentary filmmaker.
Raised in a high class family in the suburbs of Argentina's capital city, English was his mother tongue. He worked selling eggs, as a bellboy, pianist, gardener, photographer and was a soldier in Germany. His first marriage was arranged by correspondence and traveled the country by jeep. He became a key figure of the anthropological documentary, and was nominated for an Academy Award. The most prolific filmmaker of his generation, a tireless worker who let the voiceless speak, turning the filmmaker into a humanist.

Jorge documented the provinces of Argentina in a unique way for 25 years, in over 60 documentary films. In 1976, persecuted by the military dictatorship, he goes into exile in US where he works as a Professor in UCLA.
This film unravels the life of Jorge the same way he did with his characters: his childhood signed by his asthma, a high class family and a strict upbringing to became a man who changed the way documentaries are made, creating his very own genre.

When she is 14 years old, Yandri has already spent half of her life away from her father, José, who emigrated to Spain with the intention of offering his family a better future.
When her daughter emigrated, the children were left in charge of Gloria, who takes care of them as if they were their own children. Now her daughter, Jessica, has decided to take them to Spain in order to have them near her.
When he emigrates, Jorge left back in Ecuador his wife and two daughters, back then the youngest was only nine months.
This is the story of 3 families that struggle to be together again. In their way, they will find out that the time they have spent apart and distance are not the only obstacles they will have to overcome and that, maybe, despite the effort they may make, their lives will never be the same again.

Si el cine es memoria, ¿Qué pasa cuando una película se pierde? Si el filme existe solo en la memoria de quienes lo pudieron ver, ¿Existe el cineasta que lo creó?
Gustavo Valle circula por las calles de Guayaquil, un fotógrafo de matinés ignorado por la historia del cine ecuatoriano, olvidado por quienes alguna vez premiaron sus cortometrajes. Sus películas, perdidas en el laberinto burocrático de la ciudad, son reconstruidas por la memoria de los que las vieron.

La amargura y la nostalgia se entrecortan con los descartes que Gustavo Valle guarda, embodegados y humedecidos; pedazos de película que nos confirman que sí fue, que sí existió, que existe, que es.

DESCARTES attempts to reconstruct Gustavo Valle, a lonely “social events” photographer who made films in the seventies, through the narrative of those who once saw his short films. But his films are lost and memory fades. What happens when a film is lost. Does the filmmaker just... disappear?

If film is a fragment of memory, what happens when a film is lost? If a film exists only in the minds of those who have seen it, does the filmmaker who created the film exist?
Gustavo Valle pedals through the streets of Guayaquil, a birthday-party photographer ignored by the history of ecuadorian cinema, his name forgotten by the same people who once awarded his films. His movies, lost in the city's bureaucratic maze, are reconstructed by the frail memories of those who saw them.
From the director of the Film Forum at the city's cultural center, to the most prolific newsreel producer, important members of Guayaquil's cultural pulse during the seventies, now old and forgetful, guide us in the search of Gustavo Valle's films and lead us to understand the reasons why the city's filmmaking tradition was buried and forgotten. Bitterness and nostalgia are interspersed with the discarded trims Gustavo Valle has saved in the bottom of some drawer, moist in their rusted cans. These fragments of film are the only evidence that he was, he existed, he exists, he is.

Jessica decides to explore the marks of an unexplored past. She gets on a bus that takes her to some place in the mountains, where her father, who eh longs to meet, lives. When she arrives at Cayambe, she cannot find him. It is her uncle who invites her to stay at the house where her father grew up. The property is a bit gloomy, deserted. She also discovers her solitary and misterious cousin, Julio, who is 20 years old.
In Julio, Jessica finds love, sex, real sense of belonging, and family. However, what appears to be clear, is covered with confusion.

Una humilde familia harta de que los pájaros se coman el maíz de su chacra, deciden construir unos espantapájaros. Yuyari el más joven de los hijos, con mucha paciencia construye una Espantapájaros cuya belleza atrae a distintas aves de la zona. La espantapájaros cobra vida y le cuenta a Yuyari que su deseo es volar. Juntos se internan en el bosque hablador a buscar a Taita Churo, el sabio del bosque quien les mostrará el camino para hallar a la Kurikinka. En el trayecto, son asechados por la malvada Chificha que aparece para impedir que la Espantapájaros y Yuyari consigan su propósito. Al final, solo si la Espantapájaros encuentra su espíritu del vuelo mirándose en un ojo de agua podrá conseguir su sueño.

“Sara la espantapájaros” es el primer largometraje infantil que realiza Jorge Vivanco. Esta película recrea las tradiciones, cultura y música indígenas de la zona de Imbabura en Ecuador. Esta obra cinematográfica nació del proyecto "Jugando con el Abuelo", que ganó un premio internacional de la UNESCO.

A humble family was tired that the birds that ate the corn from their faro, decided to construct a “scarecrow”. Yuyari, the youngest child, with much patience makes a scarecrow which its beauty attracts at distance birds from the area. The scarecrow come to life and it told Yuyari that it`s wish is to fly. Together they enter the talking forest to look for Tatita Churo, the wiseman of the forest who will show them the path/way to find Kurikinka. On the way, they persecuted for the evil Chificha that appear in order to impede that the scarecrow and Yuyari get a wish. At the end, only the scarecrow finds her spirit of flight reflecting on the eye of water will be able to realize her dream.

Valdemar, a Brazilian diplomatic who suffers tuberculosis, is willing to collaborate with Romero and agrees to be hypnotized the night he is supposed to die. The experiment will have dramatic consequences, and Romero will be accused of Satanism and sentenced to death by the Ecuadorian president. His only chance of survival, is to talk with the presidents´ secretary and tell him the truth. This story is a free adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe´s “The facts in the case of Mr. Valdemar” and a shocking experience of psychological suspense.

Las víctimas, pertenecían al clan taromenani, un grupo indígena no contactado en Ecuador. La sociedad prácticamente no reaccionó ante la matanza, que finalmente quedó en la impunidad y el olvido. Carlos Andrés Vera exploró la historia del contacto con los huaorani hace cincuenta años, la muerte de Alejandro Labaka en 1987 y ataques recientes a madereros de la zona, para descubrir que esos acontecimientos están vinculados a la historia de los pueblos ocultos en Ecuador, un misterio que la película poco a poco intenta revelar. Se trata de un trabajo conmovedor, producido para que el espectador comprenda las circunstancias que hoy en día comprometen la supervivencia de los últimos habitantes amazónicos.

Esta película cuenta lo que la historia oficial trató de olvidar. Entre los años 1983 y 1988, Alfaro Vive Carajo (AVC) era un grupo guerrillero que estaba en su apogeo en el Ecuador. Se escuchaba historias espectaculares sobre hombres que robaban bancos vestidos de monjas, pero también sobre torturas y desapariciones a manos de la policía. Se vivía con miedo. Leon Febres Cordero, el presidente entonces, había prometido durante su campaña electoral “eliminar“ a la guerrilla. La intimidación que practicaba la policía en las calles era común y sus vehículos eran omnipresentes en la ciudades del Ecuador. Las historias de familias que sacaban a sus hijos adolescentes del pais de la noche a la mañana circulaban en todo lado. El documental muestra uno de los acontecimientos más dolorosos de la década de los ochenta en el Ecuador con testimonios y entrevistas a los sobrevivientes de una historia jamás contada.

This film tells a part of history that the official story has tried to forget. The eighties was a transcendental period in the modern history of Ecuador; where all the political power was disputed in its return to a democratic regime after a decade of military dictatorship. During this period the political parties gained force and new leaders, who are still in power, appeared. It is in this period also that a guerrilla group called Alfaro Vive Carajo! was born to dispute the political power aswell. The sprouting of this group radicalized the repressive action of Leon Febres Cordero term in power. And many members of this organization were tortured and killed in the hands of the government.
One of the most painful events of the eighties was the kidnapping of a famous banker, Nahim Isaias Barquet, by the guerilla group and his later controversial death during the military rescue operation led by the president Leon Febres Cordero himself.
In spite of its brief passing through history, Alfaro Vive Carajo! was able to shake the country's social bases.
The story is seen through the eyes of the director who, reconstructs a forgotten period with the aid of her own video archives and her meeting with the survivors of the extinct guerrilla group.

Sinopsis español

Quito 1809. Las tropas reales llegan a la ciudad desde Lima con el coronel Arredondo a la cabeza, el propósito es sofocar la rebelión de los insurgentes contra la Corona española. En medio de estos acontecimientos surge el amor entre Judit, una joven quiteña, con Pedro Matías Ampudia, el bibliotecario de Quito, quien por avatares del destino termina relacionándose con personajes que protagonizaron los actos independentistas del 10 de Agosto, y que luego terminaron con la matanza del 2 de Agosto de 1810. Esta es la historia de un amor que transcurrirá en medio de la guerra.

A powerful love story adapted from a book by Juan Valdano.At the heart of the film is the violent, thunderstruck affair between Pedro, an academic, and his student Judith (a married woman). Their story unfolds against the background of sexual and political repression of early 19th. Century Ecuador, on the eve of the revolution of 1810.

La precaria cotidianidad de Salvador, un adolescente que incursiona en hurtos callejeros junto a unos amigos, se ve trastocada por la llegada de su primo Ángel, un ex - convicto en problemas. Ratas, ratones, rateros muestra el mundo de los pequeños delincuentes en una ciudad capital Hispanoaméricana. Un relato sobre la pérdida de la inocencia, a través de la historia de un joven que pierde las pocas cosas que tenían sentido en su vida.

Salvador along with his buddy Marlon, entertains himself with petty crimes such as stealing hubcaps. Salvador is a virginal teenager who lives with his widower father and his senile grandmother and is attracted to Carolina, the beautiful daughter of a rich family.
Things change radically for Salvado with the arrival of Angel, his cousin who is also a hardened criminal on the run from some loan sharks. Hit men eventually track Angel down, and the two are nearly killed. They flee to Carolina's bedroom while she is away attending a graduation ceremony. The violence soon follows.
